Mastering the Mix: Choosing the Right Adhesive for the Job

Welcome to the whimsical world of tiling! At Curvastone, we know that understanding the jargon on adhesive bags can feel like deciphering an ancient script. So, we're here to make sure you never feel like you’re starring in a confusing thriller movie when picking out adhesives. Let’s decode those tile adhesive codes and symbols together, with a bit of humour to keep you tiling with a smile.

Whistling Plumber

C - Cementitious

Let's start with the letter "C" because it's the backbone of our adhesives. "C" stands for Cementitious. Now, don’t let the fancy term intimidate you. It means the adhesive is made from cement, which is as common in tiling as finding a plumber who whistles while he works.

2 - Improved Cement ( Added Polymers)

Next up, we have the number "2". No, it's not a sequel to the original adhesive, but it does signify an improved version. Think of it as Cement 2.0 – faster, stronger, and better. It’s like a big brother of cement adhesives, ready to take on tougher jobs with enhanced strength and durability. This extra durability is thanks to the added polymers, making it a bit more flexible than a C1 adhesive. So, if you need a little extra give, C2 has got your back. A C2 adhesive is ideal to use where there is no movement.

F - Fast Setting ( Sets quickest)

Waiting for paint to dry

Moving on to "F", which stands for Fast Setting. This one is a real timesaver. It sets quicker than you can say, “Pass me that spacer!” Ideal for those who want to get the job done without watching the adhesive dry – because let’s face it, there are more exciting things to watch, like paint drying. Seriously though, for the tilers who want to get the grouting done straight away, use a fast setting adhesive to avoid wasting any time waiting for the adhesive to dry.

T - Thixotropic (Reduced Slip)

Now, "T" is for Thixotropic. Sounds like a spell from a wizard, doesn’t it? In reality, it simply means Reduced Slip. This adhesive is perfect for wall tiles that like to make a run for it before they set. With Thixotropic adhesive, your tiles stay put, exactly where you place them.

E - Extended Opening Time ( Doesn't set as quick)

"E" stands for Extended Opening Time. This is not an invitation to leave your tools out all night, but it does give you a bit more working time. Perfect for those who like to take a break every now and then to admire their handiwork or grab a quick cup of tea. Adhesives with extended opening time take a little longer to set, making sure you have plenty of time to get the job done perfectly without being rushed.

S1 - Deformable Adhesive (Transverse Deformation between 2.5mm & 5mm)

"S1" denotes a Deformable Adhesive, with a transverse deformation between 2.5mm and 5mm. In simpler terms, it’s a bit flexible. It is ideal for areas where slight movement might occur, like floors with underfloor heating. It is important to use a flexible adhesive with underfloor heating due to the expansion and contraction when the underfloor heating comes on and goes off. Using a flexible adhesive means it has got room to expand and contract without cracking the tiles.

Flexible tiler

S2 - Highly Deformable Adhesive (Transverse Deformation over 5mm)

Lastly, we have "S2". This is for Highly Deformable Adhesive, with a transverse deformation over 5mm. An S2 adhesive should be able to do at least 5mm of flex! Think of it as the gymnast of adhesives – it can handle a lot of movement and stress without cracking under pressure. Perfect for those tricky areas where movement is inevitable.

Choosing the Right Adhesive after understand tile adhesive codes.

So, how do you choose the right adhesive? It all depends on your specific tiling needs. Here’s a quick rundown:

  • Need quick results? Go for "F" for Fast Setting.

  • Worried about tiles slipping? "T" for Thixotropic is your best bet.

  • Taking your time with a meticulous layout? Choose "E" for Extended Opening Time.

  • Tiling on a surface with potential movement? "S1" or "S2" will give you the flexibility you need.
